Bike of the Week: A Deep Blue U.P. With a Splash of Champagne

Derek Yarra |

This week we would like to present to you an UP with a classy demeanor yet a hint of rebellious tendencies. Don’t let its appearance lull you into thinking it doesn’t get rowdy on the weekends. This gravel shredder eats up the chunk and begs for more. We started with a bare Open U.P. frame, sent it out to Velocolour for a custom paint job, worked with our client to compile the perfect build spec, and delivered one of of the cleanest, classiest gravel bikes yet.

We'll start out by focusing our attention to the handiwork of our friends at Velocolour. Their work is absolutely first rate and this bike is no exception. Using our exclusive collaboration paint scheme, our client went with an exceptionally classy combination of metallic blue, champagne, and white.

The cockpit is all Zipp. SL Speed stem securing and SL-70 bar up front while an SL Speed post holding an 00 Fizik saddle. Rounding it out are Fizik tacky tape for reassured grip and a Spurcycle bell.

The drivetrain keeps things in the Sram/Zipp family and features a blend of the flagship road and mtb groups. At the bar a set of Red levers provide control to Red flat mount calipers and a XX1 rear derailleur. That derailleur moves an XX1 chain across an XX1 10-42t cassette. A Red level Quarq power meter crank turns leverage into forward trajectory. Spicing things up even further, the derailleur has been outfitted with titanium Ceramic Speed pulley wheels and the cranks spin on a Ceramic Speed bottom bracket. Only the smoothest for this bike.

It's no secret that we love all things Chris King, so it should come as no surprise to find CK hubs and headset on this beauty.

Versatility is one of our favorite traits of the Open UP, a trait our client took full advantage of by going with two wheelsets. A set of 700c Zipp 202s with Vittoria semi slick Terreno Dry tires for fast and dry days, and a set of 650b Zipp 303s with Schwalbe Thunder Burts for rougher and looser rides. Of course, both set up on the aforementioned Chris King hubs.

That wraps up this incredible gravel steed. We're incredibly proud of how this one turned out and we're excited to see the grin on our rider's face when we head out with him on it's maiden voyage this weekend. If you've got the itch to get a custom bike of your own in the works, don't hesitate to reach out. We're happy to answer any questions in the process.
