Doubling Down on Dope Domanes

by Anthony Little |

THE DOMANE TWINS

Almost six months ago, we lauded Trek's Domane RSL as one of our favorite production road bikes, and that standard remains. Today, we're proud to show off two Project One custom-painted Domanes, one in RSL trim, sporting the same razor-sharp handling and aggressive geometry that stole our hearts. The other is what one could call the "standard" Domane, though it's anything but, still proffering racebike stiffness and speed with more upright geometry and tamer handling. Both, however, are perfectly suited for today's bigger tires, along with functional touches like hidden fender mounts. With ISOSpeed decouplers front and rear, both Domanes are as comfortable as they are fast on even the absolute worst roads, and in the worst conditions, making them true workhorse road bikes.

The racey RSL wears two shades of red, while the SLR is dressed in a stunning aqua/yellow combination.

Both lookers get the standard fi'zi:k R1 carbon cockpit treatment.

Tires? Of course, it's got to be Vittoria's 28mm Corsa G+. The RSL goes straight team issue for wheels, sporting Bontrager's Aeolus 5 hoops, while we put together a custom set on the SLR: Corima's new wider 32 WS rims, laced to fast-spinning Chris King R45 hubs.

On the drivetrain side of things, the RSL maintains its WorldTour composure with Shimano's relatively new Dura-Ace 9100 mechanical groupset, right down to the pedals. Pure function. On the aqua SLR, things ended a bit more custom: SRAM Red eTap is married to our perennial favorite eeCycleworks brakeset and Speedplay Zero Ti pedals.
