BOTW: A Dark Blue & Bronze Bastion Superleggera

Peter Harrington |

This week’s featured build comes via a Bastion Superleggera, with a paint scheme chosen by the client’s partner - a woman of some taste, given how beautifully the Super’s dark blue tint over carbon with copper accents came out. Marrying blue and black takes an exceptional eye, but as this Bastion shows, when the balance is right, it’s a cut above.

To balance the blue and the undeniable muscularity of the Bastion frame, we selected Lightweight’s 63mm-deep Fernweg wheels in the hyper-subtle Schwarz edition. We shod them with 32mm Rene Herse Stampede Pass clinchers.

For those new to Bastion, the Superleggera is a lighter version of the Australian brand’s Road model. Bastion positions it as a frame for road cyclists seeking the lowest possible chassis weight and the liveliest ride within its range. The Superleggera sports a higher modulus carbon fibre construction than the Road and a smaller diameter downtube, which shaves some 100–150g off the weight.

Between the big three groupset brands, we chose Shimano and the hyper-reliable Dura-Ace, specced with climbing gears: 50/34 upfront with an 11/34 on the rear cassette. Naturally, the whole build benefits from Ceramicspeed upgrades, from the headset to the hub bearings, the bottom bracket and the OSPW printed rear derailleur, whose bronze-ish tint perfectly complemented the frame’s copper detailing. An SRM power meter and crank complete the drivetrain.

The cockpit benefits from Bastion’s clean and effective one-piece bar and stem combo. A Fizik 3d-molded saddle completes the touchpoints, while Silca’s anodized titanium bottle cages in color-matched bronze round out the build.
